Post 12: Accepting The Unknown

Learning how to deal with not knowing is an important skill that I've been improving upon. I recently noticed that when I experience some type of success in life it has more to do with me accepting what I don't know than using the knowledge I already have.

As humans, we have a vast amount of desires with no end in sight. We achieve one thing, only to have our eyes on the next prize. If I look back on two of my biggest achievements I always lacked something before I got from point A to point B.

Let me demonstrate my point with a personal example.

One of the requirements of completing my university degree was to take part in an internship and I chose to challenge myself by applying to Tokyo, Japan. After various interviews and technical tests, I was accepted as an intern to work at a Colombian commercial office in Japan.

I was ecstatic when I found out that I got in. What I didn't realize then is that the real challenge just began. I had to figure out how to live in one of the world's most expensive cities with an extremely humble budget. I did not have the knowledge and financial resources for the opportunity I was given to materialize. I knew that I did great by studying hard to impress the interviewers but not to actually go and live my life in Japan. Those were two completely different things, as I had to find a place to live, learn basic sentences in Japanese, learn how to get around in a new city not to mention to immerse myself into a very strictly defined culture.

I had to go from having nothing to being selected to work in Japan and at each stage of my journey, I lacked something to get to the next level. This is why I say that knowing how to overcome with you not knowing is an important skill. Couple that up with being resourceful and you will create a unique life with endless opportunities.
